‘Star Wars’ actor dead at 84 following lengthy illness

Richard Donat’s life was the opposite of loud fame, yet deeply entwined with it. Born in Nova Scotia in 1941, he built a career on craft rather than celebrity, moving effortlessly between theatre, television, and voice work. On stage, he earned some of Canada’s highest honours, respected not only as a gifted actor but as a thoughtful director and colleague. On screen, he quietly anchored shows like Haven, giving weight and warmth to roles that might have felt minor in lesser hands.

Offstage, he was remembered as a devoted partner, father, and proud grandfather, the kind of man whose garden and kitchen table mattered as much as any spotlight. To Star Wars fans, he’ll always be an Ewok; to those who knew him, he was simply a good man who listened, mentored, and showed up. His passing closes a chapter, but his work continues to live wherever stories are cherished.
