I wanted to repair the roof of my house.

I didn’t expect to find anything more than rust and loose screws, but that twisted little shape changed everything about that afternoon. The way it lay there, curled in on itself, felt almost intentional, like it had been frozen mid-movement. For a moment, it was easy to believe it was something sinister, a bad omen left just for me to find.

When I finally understood what it was, the fear didn’t disappear so much as shift into a quiet, heavy sadness. It wasn’t a sign, or a message, or anything supernatural. It was just a small life that had ended unnoticed, high above everyone’s heads. I climbed down from the roof a little more carefully than I’d gone up, strangely grateful for the reminder that most “mysteries” are just reality, seen before we’re ready to face it.
